Meet the Norns
I am a Shamanic healer, and as such, I communicate with the spirits of the land, including the four elements. I had been studying the element of water with the guidance of the Nature Spirit who manages our local creek. On the night of a full moon, she introduced me to the Norns. They came in on a whirlwind of energy. Urd seated herself to my left, Verdandi seated herself across from me, and Skuld seated herself to my right. And so began their instruction.
The Norns are responsible for the weaving of fate or destiny in human life. Urd is the eldest. She represents the past. Verdandi is a woman of middle age, or mother age. She represents the present. Skuld is the youngest, appearing as a young maiden. She represents the future. Together the Goddesses represent the experience of the various stages of life a woman will go through. Theirs is power over the flow of time, the power of choice, and the integration of human interaction.
The Norns have a group of women around them whose function is to help the Norns with their tasks. A spokesperson for this group has identified herself to me as Mother Hulda, a goddess in her own right. When she appears to me, she wastes little time on small talk, succinctly informs me of what needs to be done by me, and returns to her own business. The Norns are like this too. They respect hard work, industry, honesty, and expect each person to do the work necessary to straighten out their own Wyrd in order that Fate, in terms of a life lived accidentally, may become Destiny, in terms of a life lived consciously.
"Wyrd" may be defined as one's potential.
